Bad News Letter

Dear Ms. Jones:

Firstly, I would like to commend you on your well-communicated proposal of a BYU Expansion in Heber. You were fully able to explain your position and that you articulated your supporting arguments maturely and cohesively. Your reasons for a Heber expansion were solid and justified and resonated well with both my board and me. The university is indeed in high demand and creating a smaller campus in Utah would definitely provide a unique learning experience while still allowing students to be a part of the BYU lifestyle.

At this time, there are some large projects in regards to building and construction that are taking top priority. The new Life Sciences Building is approaching its final stages of construction and there is an expansion/remodel of the Clyde Building set to begin in 2016. Unfortunately for that reason, the decision was made that creating a BYU expansion in Heber is not something the University will be able to move forward with at this time.

Please know that your idea of expanding BYU’s campus to other locations is one that may be considered at a later time. I urge you to continue to communicate your feedback and ideas regarding the betterment of BYU; feedback from students is always valuable feedback.

Biography Assignment

Emma Jones was born in the Pacific Northwest in 1992. Growing up in a small suburb north of Seattle, Emma grew up listening to rock and roll, eating hot dogs from her father’s restaurant, and doodling in sketchbooks. Growing up, Emma’s passion was always to do something creative. She was always drawing, collaging, painting, and doing whatever she could to put her hands and creative mind to work. As she grew into her high school years, she began to talk herself out of a pursuing a path that involved art. She reasoned herself into something more practical, deciding to work towards a degree in Developmental Psychology as she began her schooling at Brigham Young University.

After a couple semesters in the psychology program, Emma didn’t feel satisfied with the path she was going down. She found psychology interesting, but she wasn’t excited about it; it felt more like a chore. So she decided to find something new. Emma ended up changing her major three more times before finally deciding upon the Studio Art Program at Brigham Young. After seeing a film that revolved around art and creating and being true to one's passions, Emma knew she wasn’t being honest with herself as to she loved and wanted to do. She missed the creative process and craved to be a part of it again. She decided to throw “reason” out the window and do what fed her passion. She was fortunate to be accepted into the Studio Art program at BYU in 2013 and has never been happier.

Emma plans to graduate in April of 2015 from Brigham Young University and move back up to the Seattle area. This coming summer she has an internship lined up Grand Image, an art publishing company in downtown Seattle. She hopes to secure a full time job at said company following her internship and continue to fuel her creative fire for the rest of her life.
